Just One of the Guys | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Variety Staff Variety Joyce Hyser, affecting a lower register, a short haircut, and a subtle swagger, is not totally convincing as a boy because she's too pretty and too chic. Tyler D 80s teen Comedy movie about sex and dating that is fun and different in alot of ways. Rewatchable comforting movie. Joyce Hysers performance as a girl and a boy is very impressive. This film has a charm to it and is bold, it doesn't pull punches. I really like this movie. It has alot of heart. This is an underrated 80s teen comedy. Joyce Hyser was amazing in this film. Definitely worth a watch if you haven't seen it. If you haven't seen it in a while, watch it again its nostalgic and fun to go back to. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/11/23 Full Review Steve D Joyce Hyser should have been a star (perhaps her accent hurt?). The film don't do her a lot of favors but she is really good. Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/06/23 Full Review Stephen S I'll agree that once you see Joyce as an 80's Betty , it's hard to get past seeing her as a boy and making it believable, but it is an 80's gem ! This movie has nothing to do with being transgendered . She did it because she felt that if going to another school and passing her rejected material as a man , it would be accepted. It's about the experience ! Her little brother is hilarious ! Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member If you had basic cable at any time in the 80s and 90s, there's a good chance you've seen this movie, which strangely enough is based on the Bard's Twelfth Night. It was written by Dennis Feldman, who went on to write The Golden Child and the first two Species movies, and Jeff Franklin, who wrote Summer School, Love Stinks and then created Full House.Pretty much any kid who grew up in the 80s can tell you the story of Terri Griffith (Joyce Hyser), who becomes Terry Griffith as another school, all to write a story that proves that men get better treatment than women. She takes on Rick Morehouse (Clayton Rohner, April Fools Day and I, Madman) as her project, transforming him from geek into someone girls are interested in before falling for him herself. She already has a boyfriend — it's Leigh McCloskey from Inferno! — and gets fixed up with Sherilyn Fenn, which is pretty much the best fix-up of all time, and runs afoul of perennial bad teen Billy Zapka. Seriously, Zapka was the ultimate 80s heel between The Karate Kid, Back to School and this movie.I'm not sure that this movie could come out today. The idea of a girl being a guy for comedic value would have to rub someone the wrong way. But maybe people could watch it and think, "My parents sure liked some silly films," to which point they'd get the reply, "That was on Comedy Central all the time." Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member Not as good as I thought I remembered. Does not hold up over time. Looks and sounds like a 1980’s sitcom, not that that’s too bad. Expected canned laughter. But if you don’t expect too much, it’s ok. Rated 2/5 Stars • Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/06/21 Full Review kyle v Reviewed 5.25.21 I'm keenly aware this is not a high quality film. The acting isn't the best. The story lacks originality. And it hasn't aged well in myriad ways. Yet, I must admit, I like it. Mostly because it aired repeatedly on HBO when I was a child, and it brings back funny memories. I imagine it offers similarlaughs for appropriately aged teens of the 21st century too(Parents beware, it's provocative and containsmature language, and nudity). But it was exactly these things I liked about it when I was a kid. It's stupid. It's silly. It's vulgar. And it's oh so 80's, which is worth a dozen laughs itself. For those familiar with 80's teen comedies, it could be described as the R version of 'Can't Buy Me Love.' Or a more accessible, and less racy, 'Fast Times at RidgemountHigh.' In reality, the movie is probably 2 stars. For my memories, and the potential fun for the appropriately aged teenagers, let's keep it 'fresh,' and go with 3 stars.
