Everything New In The Minecraft 1.21 Update (Tricky Trials) (2024)

Summary

  • The Minecraft 1.21 update, Tricky Trials, adds new challenges, enemies, crops, and items.
  • Trial Chambers introduce procedurally generated dungeons with traps, intense combat, and a new weapon option, the mace.
  • There will be new ominous events like Village Raids, alongside new enemies The Bogged and The Breeze mobs in the 1.21 update.

The newest update for Minecraft has been titled “Tricky Trials,” leaning heavily into the implementation of new challenges this update will add to the game for players. Like all new Minecraft updates, this brings new enemies, new crops, and new special items to uncover and aid in players’ journeys – though Mojang has yet to spill all the details just yet.

Tricky Trials will be released for all Minecraft players on June 13, but those who want to try out some of these upcoming features early just need toenable Snapshots if playing on the Java version or Previews/Beta on the Bedrock version. Even without the full picture, all of these new additions make the 1.21 update one to keep an eye on.

Tricky Trials will release simultaneously on Minecraft's Bedrock and Java Editions, though there are other differences between the two.

The Trial Chambers (& A New Weapon) Are Big Additions In 1.21

How Trial Chambers Work

It seems much of the new content the 1.21 update contains will be centered around the Trial Chambers. These dungeon-like buildings will have traps and some intense combat for players to overcome – and are also built with some of the new blocks featured in the update. They're procedurally generated, meaning it's near impossible to encounter the same Trial Chamber twice.

These trials can be tackled alone or with friends – though, considering the foes players will face within their walls are some of the more deadly ones, thanks to this new update, it’ll be easier to tackle with a cohort of companions. These trials are meant to be difficult (as implied by the name), but those who dare to venture in will find plenty of loot waiting for them.

But what's a new combat challenge if not a great opportunity to also introduce a new weapon? The mace will be added as an additional weapon option in the 1.21 update, dealing some intense damage that can bust through enemy armor pretty easily. This weapon will also work in tandem with the drops from one of the new enemy mobs added.

Bad Omens & Village Raids Will Make Minecraft Harder

This Status Effect Is Added To Ominous Events

Seasoned Minecraft players may have already dealt with the Bad Omen status effect after killing an Outpost or Patrol Raid Captain, but in 1.21, the effect will instead be triggered by drinking the Ominous Bottle, an item needed to get Ominous Trial Keys. The item will be dropped by Raid Captains after they're defeated, or it can be found locked away in the Trial Chambers. Instead of the status effect being a temporary condition, players can take it on to trigger a series of new experiences.

These new experiences, dubbed ominous events, will make the game a little bit harder for those who feel like they've already mastered everything Minecraft has to offer. The Village Raids, triggered when walking into a village while under the Bad Omen effect, were one example of these ominous events. Mojang hasn't shared every new event and roadblock players may come across with this new feature, but it seems like something that will continue to be expanded in future updates.

The Crafter Will Make Automating Possible In 1.21

Save Time Crafting With This New Block In Minecraft

According to the official Minecraft blog, the Crafter will allow players to automate their crafting, using Redstone to continuously craft an item without being manned by the player. Using five iron ingots, a regular crafting table, two things of Redstone dust, and a dropper, players will be able to create their very own Crafter.

Once created, players can then use Redstone to automate the Crafter, triggering it to spit items into the overworld as they're crafted. By getting creative, players will be able to batch-process hundreds of items without doing so themselves stack-by-stack, really saving time in expansive and well-maintained worlds.

Two New Enemy Mobs: The Bogged & The Breeze

These New Formidable Foes Are Hostile Spawns

Most new content updates in Minecraft come with the addition of new enemies for combat-loving players to face off against. The Bogged is a new variation of the skeleton mob, shooting poisoned arrows at players with sickening accuracy. While they’re just as weak to fire as the base skeletons are, these will be a bit more tricky to scout, given their affinity for hiding. The Bogged will be found in swamps and mangrove swamps, as well as the new Trial Chambers.

Those who remember the Blaze will likely find the Breeze to be a similar foe. Made up of cool-toned swirling air, this enemy shoots wind projectiles. Getting hit with one of these will knock a player back, making them particularly difficult (though not impossible) to engage in melee combat with. Felling a Breeze will reward the player with Breeze Rods, which can then be used to craft Wind Charges for the mace (similar to Blaze Rods). Currently, the Breeze is only confirmed to spawn in Trial Chambers, though it may appear in other places once the update drops.

A Handful Of New Blocks Will Also Be Added In 1.21.

Copper Blocks Are Getting A Special Treatment

Though Mojang has not yet unveiled the exact list of blocks that will be included in the upcoming update, there are a few that can be picked out from the early trailers – confirming the developer kept its design-forward players in mind. Copper blocks will be getting an upgrade, with new decorative blocks and ones capable of being chiseled. There are also a handful of new decorative items and 20 new paintings to add to the mix.

One of the more eye-catching blocks is the Vault, a block that will hold the treasures awaiting those who venture into the Trial Chambers. These blocks can only be opened with keys found in the Trial Chambers, holding some of the various rewards players will find squirreled away, but creative players are bound to find a way to take them outside and implement them in unique creations.
